The Public Commission on Legal Aid was established in 2010 by six funding partners who recognized the need to engage the public of British Columbia regarding legal aid in the province in order to determine their priorities for the future. The funding partners include The Canadian Bar Association (British Columbia), The Law Society of British Columbia, Crown Counsel Association of British Columbia, The Law Foundation of British Columbia, the Vancouver Bar Association and the Victoria Bar Association.

The Public Commission on Legal Aid officially commenced its work in June of 2010 when Leonard Doust, QC was appointed as Commissioner.
